Following an extensive investigation by the police and CPS, the prison officer that was charged with Mesut’s care, Graham Evans, has today been convicted by a jury of Misconduct in Public Office at Worcester Crown Court.

Graham Evans fabricated the number of welfare checks he conducted on Mesut. He was on overnight duty at HMP Hewell on 7 June 2018 and was required to check on Mesut, who was high-risk, four times every hour.

He recorded that he had carried out a total of 33 checks but CCTV footage later revealed he had performed only 15, leaving Mesut unsupervised for significant periods of time.

The conviction is welcomed by Mesut’s family particularly given that it is so rare for prison officers to be held to account for failing to care for inmates. They ask for privacy at this sensitive and difficult time.

The Family are represented by Daniel Lemberger Cooper of Imran Khan and Partners, who can be contacted on 0207 404 3004 or danielc@ikpsolicitors.com
